Dylan William (from his book Embedded Formative Assessment) articulates five key strategies of formative assessment:

1. Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning intentions and criteria for success.
Sharing with students the learning intentions.

2. Engineering effective classroom discussions, activities, and learning tasks that elicit evidence of learning.
Finding out where the students are- and what they already know.

3. Providing feedback that moves learning forward.
Feedback- not so much looking back- more looking forward to the next steps in the students learning.

4. Activating learners as instructional resources for one another.
Students should be seen as learning resources -helping each other in the learning process.

5. Activating learners as owners of their own learning.
Activating students to become owners of their own learning.

Dylan William identifies about fifty classroom techniques that teachers can use to embed these strategies in their classroom practice.
