Dean's argument is a little more nuanced than the pull quote above. You'll get that from reading the full article ... and the comments.

"A blog's heart and soul lives in the comments."
You'll grow your blog and develop your readership through active participation in networks. i.e. commenting, developing a digital identity, and participating in an online community such as twitter (but that's another workshop ;-)).
